Beyond Sausage – What comes after the sausage?

Advertising | After Beyond Meat now Beyond Sausage! I was quite taken with the burger patties, especially as a burger in an all-vegetarian version. So here now the next highlight, namely vegan bratwursts or sausages. In the U.S. for some time to buy, with us to date only in wholesale, but that will soon change. I had definitely secured a ten-pack of the frozen Beyond Sausage and four of them recently went on my kettle grill.

Beyond Sausage

I try out everything, am always curious about new things and try to work out my personal point of view independently of this unspeakable and unnecessary two-front debate “vegetarians/vegans versus meat eaters”. And I’ll say it right away: I’m an omnivore, I eat everything, I try everything at least once, and most of it tastes good to me or I know what to do with it.

Beyond Sausage

That’s what Beyond Sausage is all about for me: it has to taste good! Of course, it would be terrific if it was an organic Beyond Sausage, but it’s not, so it’s all about the taste and the overall impression. After defrosting, there was then unfortunately the first minus points, because the sausage is too soft, feels daurch not very pleasant to break quickly. The feeling when touching it also comes from the gut substitute, which has a slimy consistency. The smell is ok, quite spicy and gives hope.

Beyond Sausage

Barbecue

Because of the soft texture, I decided to grill the Beyond Sausage indirectly, which means bringing it up to temperature first and letting it firm up. That works out quite well. However, when acquainted with direct heat, another dilemma appears, because the intestinal substitute does not tolerate high direct temperatures. It bursts, shrivels and becomes unsightly. A few roasted flavors still go, but it’s not really satisfying.

Food

On the plate, the gut substitute then quickly becomes dry and parchment-like, so also nothing reasonable. But now: The sausage tastes really good. When grilled, the consistency is just right and the cut looks good too. From the smell, you could tell it was intense and well-seasoned, and that’s confirmed when you bite into it. Juicy mouthfeel, spicy flavor, quite like a familiar bratwurst, delicious! I’m pretty sure that in a blind tasting, many wouldn’t be able to tell it apart from a regular bratwurst. And if, certainly those who also claim to be able to taste the difference between gas and charcoal grill 😉

Beyond Sausage

Conclusion

So here I sit, writing this post, torn. The path to a tasty sausage here is arduous and paved with stumbling blocks that can definitely spoil the good taste in the end. If it is possible to create a bowel substitute that does not have the problems described above, then it will be an alternative. But why does Beyond Sausage need a gut substitute at all? In the current version, it serves no purpose anyway, but only disturbs the overall impression.
